Switching from a BS to a BSN program!

Nursing is a noble profession and it pays well.  There are several methods by which you can enter directly or laterally into the nursing profession. You can be a RN or an ADN and then apply for a BSN degree to be a qualified and trained nurse with important technical and clinical experience at every stage. But if you’ve just done a Bachelor of Science degree and want to join a BSN program, then there’s no need to worry. This short cut method is also possible to get into a career in nursing as easily as possible.

What should you have?

  1. Before you can be admitted into a BSN degree, you should have a GPA average of 3.0 or 4.0.
  2. The Bachelor of Science degree that you have completed should be from a recognized college or university.
  3. Entering into a BSN program without any previous experience is extremely competitive as schools take several aspects into consideration while choosing students. You have to remember that there are students who have previous experience in clinical nursing and a diploma or an associate’s degree to back it up. Considering the scarcity of nurses, college administrators are more likely to give them preference and put you on a waiting list.
  4. Make sure you have added any relevant hospital volunteer experience into your resume while applying for a vacancy. Remember that any volunteer experience you have in the health care field as even as a nursing assistant will give you a competitive edge in the selection process.
  5. You should have atleast five of the six college credit prerequisites before you can be considered for an application. When you are in college or high school you should have atleast one medical, health related, natural or physical science credit atleast five years within admission.
  6. English language in a TOEFL exam with a score of at least 240 is essential.

Please remember that getting into any nursing program is tough as there are long waiting lists for students. You will have to make sure that you do all you can to appear as a favorable candidate for admission.
